Inscribed 3 1/2" x 5 1/2" black and white portrait of popular screen character actor, S. Z. "CUDDLES" SAKALL (1884-1955). The ink inscription reads, "To Bill from S. Z. Sakall - Hollywood 1945."
The Hungarian-born actor (birth name Gero Jeno) was a veteran of Hungarian, German and British films dating back to the silents before arriving in the U.S. in 1940 before Europe fell to the Nazis. Often appearing in comedies or musicals, he usually played a confused or befuddled character, and is, perhaps best remembered for his portrayal of "Carl", the waiter in Casblanca, a role which he originally turned down.
